Day 1; Botanical Beach to Little Kuitsche
14.5km // 304m // 4h 51m
We start the day with a big breakfast and make our way to the trailhead! Once we and all our packs are unloaded we send both of the cars to the endpoint to leave a pickup car for when we’re all the way through. Now it’s time to start the journey!
Our spirits are high, my rain jacket is thinking about me back in Alberta and of course it is a rainy day but luckily I am saved by the emergency gas station poncho. I’ve already almost slipped on a wet log bridge to my doom and we’re getting hangry after our quick 14km trek with only one snack break but camp is in sight!

Day 2: Little Kuitsche to Sombrio Beach
5km // 51m // 1h 46m
Today feels like something out of a dream being an easy 5km on the beach with tide pools galore and a site on the water waiting at the end for us. Our cheeks are burnt but there’s nothing like an ocean bath, some frisbee tossing, and a beach angel bringing us drinks and a garbage pack out!

Day 3: Sombrio Beach to Bear Beach
20km // 875m // 11h
If you’re reading this I may or may not be dead. The signs have been misleading us in km and today ended up being ~20km, an additional 5 to what we were expecting. Tears were shed, physical and mental limits were pushed to the max, and choke slams were made via rope supports but we finally see the group ahead setting up camp, making hot food!! 11 hours of hiking later we have made it!!
This was definitely the day where all the elevation gain showed up but also one of the most beautiful days with the majority of the hike being in the lush island forrest.

Day 4: Bear Beach to China Beach
10.2km // 395m // 3h 18m
Morale is low but we are on the final home stretch to the cars after what feels like the hardest 10km’s of our lives!! Tree roots feel higher, and somehow our packs feel just as heavy as when we started! We’re taking our time and stopping for all the views but I also can’t help daydreaming about the shower and comfy bed that is so close!

5pm update: what we thought would be an easy hour drive back to town to showers and food that wasn’t rehydrated, it was just our luck to get stopped for an additional 5 hours waiting for a fallen tree and power line on the road to be safely removed! Luckily in hopes to make the best of the time, we stumbled upon a pre viewing of a home brewery run by an old comedian to pass the time. In addition, left over car snacks and lots of rounds of 21 questions definitely helped keep our sanity!

Overall this was the most beautiful backpacking trip I have done yet! I loved being on the coast and although it wasn’t very technical it is definitely for someone wanting a challenge!
